Describe the role emotional intelligence played in your PSY-260 course experience

June 27, 2021

This course allowed me to expand my emotional intelligence by learning to look at statistics analytically and not emotionally. Throughout the different analyses we performed, I had to take a step back from how I felt about the data and instead reflect on it and consider how to apply the information. Emotional intelligence also helped me learn how to not read between the lines, so to say. In statistical analysis, it is important to not make assumptions. In the simplest of terms, if the data finds something to be true, it does not automatically mean that the opposite is false. This skill is critical in my chosen career path as confirmation bias is detrimental in practicing ethical law.

I chose to add project one to my e-portfolio as it demonstrates my understanding of how a holistic view of personality theory is necessary. Researching the different approaches to theory provides a broader understanding of how people perceive the world and function within it. For instance, biological traits may influence a person's ability to effectively communicate, offering a unique opportunity to approach the communication from another angle. In this way, a well-rounded understanding of personality theory applies to the programmatic theme of emotional intelligence. Being able to apply theory in different instances instead of just reacting perpetuates more effective communication and deeper relationships with the people in our lives.
